J.R.R Tolkien
The Hobbit was written by J.R.R Tolkien and published in 1937 and was based on a tale he told to his children. J.R.R Tolkien was born on the 3rd of January 1892 Bloemfontein, in South Africa to Arthur Reuel and Mabel Tolkien. He had a younger brother, Hilary Arthur Reuel Tolkien. After his mother's death in 1904, Tolkien and his brother went to live with a Catholic priest in Birmingham. He attended Exeter college and became a lieutenant in World War 1.
Tolkien's interest in Nordic Mythology influenced his works. Norse and Germanic Myths tell tales of Elves and Dwarves and these appear in The Hobbit . Tolkien also used religious themes such as battles for good and evil, death and immortality and mercy and pity. Tolkien has written many other books these include The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, The Simarillion, The Adventures Of Tom Bomdabil and the Children Of Hurin. All of the stories take place in Middle Earth.
His books have a strong international fan base and his novels The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Ring's Trilogy have been adapted into award winning films. Tolkien died on September 2nd 1973 at the age of 81.
