Setting
The Hobbit is set in the third age of Middle Earth 2941-2942. Middle Earth is a fantasy land created by J.R.R Tolkien. The Hobbit starts in Hobbiton, a town in the peaceful shire in Western Lands. As the company goes on their journey they move through many places. They move East across the Misty Mountains and through the forest of MIrkwood, to the area surrounding the Lonely Mountain. Here they find the ruins of Dale and Lake Town.
Tolkien describes Middle Earth as similar to Europe in the Middle Ages. Elves, Dwarves and other races shared the world with humans and magic was a very powerful force. These lands are not like any place on earth but have an earthly feel to them and this lets the readers imagine what these places would be like.

The Lonely Mountain
Erebor also known as the Lonely Mountain is a fantasy location in J.R.R Tolkien's The Hobbit its location is in Middle Earth. It once was the home of the dwarves until the dragon Smaug took control of the mountain and the great horde of treasure. The lonely mountain is the final destination of the dwarves quest. The climax of the novel, The Battle of the Five Armies, takes place at the foot of the Lonely Mountain.
Mirkwood
Mirkwood is a forest, home to the elves and their king Thranduil. It is located over the Misty Mountains. The company find Mirkwood dark and scary filled with spiders. The company are attacked by the spiders and captured by the Elves. Mirkwood is a difficult part of their journey.
Hobbiton
Hobbiton is a villge located in the shire. Its a small beautiful place inhabited by Hobbits. Bilbo Baggins lives in a Hobbit hole on the hill at Bagend which is a wealthy section of Hobbiton. Bilbos journey begins and ends here. The Bilbo the returns to Bagend at the end of the novel has grown into a brave courageous Hobbit.
